Tips for a Home First Aide Kit

Basic Home First Aide Kit

When you are putting together a first aide kit for your home there are several things to consider. Do you need oils that you can use on your pets as well as your children? Do you live in the country with livestock? What occupations are there in the household, example: do you or your spouse come into contact with chemicals at work? Are you generally healthy except for the minor stomach upset, colds and occasional minor cuts? All these will help you to determine which oils and herbs to keep on hand.

Lets say you live in the country and you have horses, donkeys, cows or goats. You would then look for oils that help with cuts from barbed wire, colic, hoof problems. You may also need oils to assist in calming during a trim or a birth. You may need oils that help with issues of muscle strain, possibly saddle sores.

Maybe you have a dog breeding business and you need oils to use on the mom, dad and puppies knowing that what you are using is safe. Do you have a dog that perhaps seems to always find that one piece of fence to cut his or her face on? Puppies that play a little too rough with each other and wind up with a cut on the ear. Like my puppy who managed to find something in the backyard that caused her eyelid to swell and itch. Our other puppy who plays rough bit her on the nose. It is times like these that you can make your own products to use.

Most of us have children whether younger or older, if your children are older you may now have grandchildren. Would you like to have a simple remedy for mosquito bites, bee stings or splinters? Do they sometimes eat way too much candy (you know grandma's are good at always having candy and cookies around) and they get a tummy ache. Maybe they played in the water and now have a slight fever or perhaps a sunburn. Sometimes they just play too hard all day and now are unable to calm down enough to sleep?

Essential oils can offer simple and effective solutions to some of life's little non-life threatening mishaps. Herbs can be used as a poultice on wounds, bites or swelling. For animals I always keep on hand for my horse a product called Herbal Bute from Equine Science at http://www.herbs4horses.com, they also carry products for our dogs and cats as well. You can make a poultice using herbs for a child, you would simply add the appropriate essential oils to the herbal paste.

I no longer have young children living at home, my children living at home are now teenagers and my oldest has children of her own. I have always kept Lavendula agustifolia (Lavender) on hand, this is my staple in my First Aide kit. I have used Lavender on my grandchildren when they were bit by a mosquito and it would reduce the swelling and itching. I have added 8-10 drops of Lavender to warm water and bathed wounds after a large dog attacked my little dog. Lavender is great to apply to burns in the kitchen, smashed fingers from a door, infected toe nail.

I would not be without Tea Tree, highly antibacterial, antiseptic and antifungal. You can place a few drops on the umbilical cord of a newborn calf or colt if you don't have iodine. Mix with water and wash a wound from a nail, glass or bite. You can even add it to cornstarch or arrowroot and put it in the shoes of your loved ones when they really smell. Works great for athletes foot or any kind of foot fungus.

I would not be without Activated Charcoal from Nature's Sunshine. Activated Charcoal will absorb poisons within the system. If you need to act fast on your way to a Doctor or Hospital and your child or pet has swallowed something poisonous you can give them the charcoal. It does not go bad and can be kept around to even absorb toxins in the case of a poisonous bite, make a poultice and apply to the area.
